This is my handpicked list of intriguing things I found going on throughout Arizona – as well as some you can enjoy anywhere – for the months of September + October!
Happening annually on the first Saturday in September, this day is about educating the public on vultures + condors. These are often misunderstood but vitally important creatures.

Virtual Dragonfly Festival Events

Zoom
The Dragonfly Festival takes place throughout September in Southern Arizona. While many of the events include in-person visits to waterways in the region, there are a couple presentations that anyone can join via Zoom! Each talk focuses on a specific type of dragonflies and is given by a Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources naturalist.
Sep. 8, 7-8pm MST:Pond Damsels, the largest damselfly family in the world.
Sep. 16, 7-8pm MST: Skimmers, a colorful and common group of dragonflies that you can spot at ponds and streams.
Under the theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” this year’s International Day of Peace honors the ‘everyday architects of peace’—people driving local action, laying the groundwork for stability, and building a lasting peace from the ground up.
Until this year, free entrance days were open to all National Park visitors, which is how I believe it should be. Unfortunately, it now only apples to U.S. citizens and residents.
Nonresidents will pay the regular entrance fee and any applicable nonresident fees.
National parks where nonresidents age 16 and older must pay a $100 nonresident fee (in addition to the regular entrance fee): Acadia, Bryce Canyon, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia + Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion.

Route 66 Centennial – Route 66 turns 100 this year, and there are celebrations all along the iconic highway – some of which are on this List! We’ll also have more for you coming up on the art and local flavor along the “Mother Road!”
U.S. Semiquincentennial – a.k.a. the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence or America250. Branching off of that are initiatives like Vote250, which encourages voter registration, as well as Trails250 and Birding250, which promote spending time outside.

September 9 — February 21, 2027:Kim Chong Hak, Painter of Seoraksan in Steele Gallery. Exhibition of works from throughout Korean artist Kim Chong Hak’s career, including recent botanical studies on mulberry bark paper.

The result of a collaborative project that began last November between artists Jill Sans + Kate Watters, panels are installed on the Arboretum grounds with abstract designs made using pigments from plants they either grew or foraged. Purposely impermanent, the art naturally changes as it is exposed to the elements.

Three miles of city streets from Armory Park into the City of South Tucson will be closed to motorized vehicles for most of the day, allowing people to use the space to connect with each other, participate in activities hosted by neighborhood groups + businesses, walk, bike, roll, skate, hang out, and enjoy!

Tour in support of GOTTA GET OUT, the third album from Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong, and Lucia and Mila de la Garza, and the most collaborative. Rather than writing songs individually and then sharing them with the group, they shared work in progress and build music + lyrics together.
