March 2018: Typewriters

Another Phoenix Warehouse District spot that opened its doors during Art Detour was the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center.

One room had about half a dozen old typewriters in the corner, presumably left from the building’s days as a high school.

I do love looking at metal typewriters – the shape of the keys, the font of the letters and punctuation.

If I see one, I nearly always have to take a photo for some reason. (I have a similar complulsion with old sewing machines.)

Maybe there’s something about them I feel I need to preserve.

January 2018: Eruption

Since we couldn’t work a Naples/Pompeii visit into our Italy trip (another one of those trade-offs) even though I’d always wanted to go, I basically lost my mind when I read there would be an exhibition with artifacts from Pompeii at the Arizona Science Center here in Phoenix. Pompeii was coming to me!

One of the events surrounding the exhibit was a simulation of the historic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius with lava flows projected onto the outside of the building, and smoke, bursts of flame, and “ash” coming from the top.

It was quite the spectacle. But I was honestly more moved by the exhibit inside, by household items that look just as they did when they were in use nearly 2000 years ago and by the tragic fate of people who possessed them.

The exhibition was very well done, putting the items in context with wall-sized photos of the architectural site and video reconstructions of the city.

It is in Phoenix through May, and I believe it will be on tour for awhile. I would definitely recommend seeing Pompeii if it comes to you.

December’s Last Sunset and 2017 Photos

The sunset the last evening of 2017 was gorgeous – nature’s fireworks to celebrate the New Year.

A couple of the year’s other beautiful sunsets showed up on my Instagram Best Nine, fitting neatly into its unintentional bright pink/purple/royal blue color scheme. All of my most-liked photos were taken in Arizona, so, of course, they include some desert scenery.

Only a few coincided with my monthly photo picks.

I thought the photos I’d picked for 2017 were more varied than the automatically-generated Best Nine list. But, looking back, almost all are plant- or architecture-related. I guess it was a good year for both those categories.

I wonder what 2018 will bring.
